Skills building assignment

OK, so our whole unit one is capture...so Armando has set us this 4 week task to develop skills by editing our own video to a song. We were given a list of four tracks and had to choose one. I choose Eliza Doolittle. I have a few ideas for a video but at the moment i have to start writing down how the track makes me feel personally and read through the lyrics of the song. Heres the song......

OK, today ive completly drawn up the storyboard/shot list for the starter project to the song by Eliza doolittle. The video is going to be of my sister and her boyfriend. it is going to be happy and cheerful. Im going to film it on penzance proenarde. Armando said the point of this project is getting used to final cut pro, so im not going to write to much on the actual filming.
Here's a copy of the shot list that i scanned into the computer.

10th October I went out with my sister and her boyfriend Michael and we recorded my music video. I managed to get about 6 minuets of film for a 3 minuet song so that's good. It was quite easy filming the bits outside, the shots were longer and less "fiddly." In the first minuet of the song i filmed about ten 3-7second shots. Hopefully though this will give me more to mess around with when i'm editing it on final cut pro.
Filming it was very fun.....we did loads of practice shots before we actually started filming so i got it right...it was quite frustrating some of the time, but I'm really pleased with the footage that i got. There's only one shot I'm concerned about. Its about 1minuet of film, but i only need it to be about 5 seconds, but ill just cut it and speed it up.

13th October. Today I captured my tape onto final cut pro. I also started to edit it. I looked through all the footage first and i was pleased with it. I mainly just cut the shots into smaller ones and reused them again and again, but i think it looks a bit boring. I tried some of the effects on final cut but i couldn't get them to work. I'm going to get help with that next lecture. I scanned my shot list onto the computer so i could put it on my blog, but i haven't exactly stuck to it. Some of my shots were to long, short or boring after I'd edited it so i added in a few scenery shots that i also recorded on Sunday. It took be about an hour to do the first 40seconds, but im still not pleased with it. Its quite hard because i still need time to get used to final cut, but in the end it should hopefully look ok.

15th October i did loads of work today on my film. I learned how to use effects on my different shots so that the film looked more effective instead of just cutting an re-using shots. I still have about half of the film left to do but the more i use final cut pro the easier it is. Here's a few stills from my film.

30th October Today i finished editing my film on final cut pro. First i finished clipping the remaining shots and putting them on the timeline. Then i watched the video through to make sure it was all in time, i did have to make a few adjustments on the spend and length of some shots. But im very pleased with  the final results. I added effects that i wanted to the shots to make my film more interesting. I didn't use a huge variety of effects, mainly the "bad film" effect. But i speed a lot of my shots up and reversed a few of them.
There was a few shots at the beginning of the film that i wasn't very happy with. They ran on to long and didn't fit with the music. So i made them shorter and added an extra shot.
I did experience a few problems with the editing that i can learn from next time. When i was out filming i got about 5 minuets of filming for a 3 minuet video which i thought was good. But when it came to editing, and cutting the shots, i actually ended up re-using some shots, but changing the effects on them so that it wasn't repetitive. So next time i go out and film, i need to make sure i get at least 5 minuets worth of extra shots.  I think the cause of this was because on my shot list (picture above) i had set times for how long each shot was going to be. I didn't give myself much time for variation or experimenting. But now i know that is an important thing i need to do.
Another issue i found is that a shot in my film was of Molly singing to the lyric. When we recorded it she was actually sing to fast so i had to slow the speed down when i edited it. In some places on the fim this has worked great, in others it hasn't worked so well. So next time i film a shot of someone singing to the lyrics i need the actual song playing in the background so they can sing along with it so i can get the shot just right.

A few other things i found useful were scenery shots. If you need to film a small gap in a film, using a quick shot of a flower, or a view is a really good way of doing that i found. On final cut pro, i found using a short shot that was about 2 seconds long, then repeating that shot made a really good "glitch" effect. There is a part in my film where i used this technique and i got it to go in time with the music.

Overall i am very pleased with my film. I found it very useful to help me get used to final cut pro and to stop myself making a few mistakes next time i make a film. I had a few focus issues with the camera which i now know i need to check before i film, and i also no its easier not to give the shots you want an exact time slot. I really like using final cut pro to edit it and i found it really fun to film, cut, edit and watch!!!
